On June 30, 1963 I retired at age 36, with 20 years service from the United States Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia. My rank was E-7. The rank of E-8 had been authorized, but if offered and accepted, another 3-year extension would be required. E-9 was only a thought at the time, however, it was authorized at a later time after I retired. My monthly annuity was only $175 - half pay as an E-7 for 20 years service.
During the last 5 years in the Corps, the promotion to Warrant Officer could have be had, but if accepted, it would require me to remain in the Corps for several years to make my retirement worthwhile. And besides, I could not afford the $2,000 for the officer's uniform. |
